SIAMESE TWINS PICNIC

La semana pasada Sara Li y Ana K fueron de picnic al peñón de Ifach. Nos han enviado algunas fotos dela maravillosa tarde que pasaron. Si quereis podeis verlas en su ÁLBUM.

ALGO SOBRE MI/ SOMETHING ABOUT ME

En 1996 me licencié en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de Pontevedra. Entonces me apropiaba de imágenes rescatadas de libros infantiles, de latas de conservas, de ilustraciones religiosas, etc. para manipularlas y cambiar así su sentido original, con la intención de cuestionar la apariencia de todo lo que nos resulta tan normal. De esta época cabría destacar la serie de recortables con la que fui seleccionada para participar en La muestra de Arte Joven y en Circuitos de Artes Plásticas tan sólo un año después de licenciarme, en el 97.

Un año después hice mi primera exposición individual. Fue en la galería Marta Cervera. Allí presenté una serie de enormes cuadros con tartas nupciales en las que los novios se entretenían con diversos juegos sexuales sobre la cima de la tarta, en un lecho de nata y flores de azúcar. Por esas mismas fechas participé en la exposición Madrid-Berlín que se celebró en el entonces Centro Cultural Conde Duque en Madrid y posteriormente en las salas del Künstlerhaus Bethanien en Berlín.

En el 2000 empecé a trabajar con la Galería Espacio Mínimo. Galería en la que he expuesto individualmente en cuatro ocasiones y con la que he participado en muchas ferias internacionales como ARCO, Frieze, Artisima, Art Chicago, Volta, etc. La primera vez que expuse con ellos fue en Murcia, en el 2000. La exposición se llamó Beefcake como homenaje a Tom of Finland. En ella se podía ver esculturas de tartas hechas con penes gigantes, retratos al óleo de mujeres que juegan y acarician a sus perritos-pene o fotografías rescatadas del álbum de la familia pene. Una exposición realmente divertida que un año después tuvo una segunda parte en San Francisco, en la galería Catherine Clark, donde presenté una exposición individual, Wedding Day, que recogía las imágenes de la boda de la familia pene, escenas sacadas del Álbum de fotos de la boda de mis padres.

En el 2003 leí mi tesis doctoral sobre "Arte y SIDA en España", en la que analizaba y reflexionaba sobre la reacción de la sociedad española frente al SIDA y cómo el arte español se acercó a la enfermedad. Un año después inauguré la exposición “Cómeme, cómeme” (2004). La muestra nos invitaba a entrar en una singular pastelería en la que podíamos degustar una gran variedad de gelatinas de carne (con cerebros, intestinos, corazones, venas, músculos, etc.) y unas tartas y pasteles hechas con pieles humanas enfermas. La exposición nos llevaba a la boca el dolor y el sufrimiento, para mostrarnos aquello de nosotros mismos que nos asusta, nuestra fragilidad. De esta expo surgió la necesidad de trabajar en vídeo. Después de casi dos años realizando esculturas de tartas, empecé a verlas como la presentación de algo ya terminado, pero algo que también sugería un proceso. Al interesarme por ese proceso imaginario por el que se habían hecho las gelatinas humanas pensé inmediatamente hacerlo a través de un vídeo, como si se tratase realmente de la realización de una receta culinaria y así me lancé al mundo del video.

Mi última exposición en Espacio Mínimo fue“Carnicería Love” La exposición nos introducía dentro de una carnicería humana. Aunque a primera vista las mujeres de la Carnicería Love parecen estar preparando recetas con los cuerpos de otros seres humanos, en realidad, se trocean, se hornean, se saltean, se arrancan su propio corazón, en definitiva, se cocinan a sí mismas.

Así, los cuerpos sobre los que se llevan a cabo las recetas representan la exteriorización de los sentimientos de quienes los están cocinando. Las cocineras no pretenden dañar o agredir a otros, sino que tratan de mostrar su dolor, su sufrimiento, su impotencia, etc. Los seres que cocina se convierten el reflejo de estos sentimientos. Cada receta es por tanto una mirada a su interior, una forma de purgar su dolor.

Aunque el miedo queda reflejado fuera de ella, este surge de su interior. El otro, el monstruo que le aterra, está dentro pero lo saca y lo pone sobre la mesa para enfrentarse a él. Ese monstruo es parte de su ser, por eso los cuerpos que cocina son casi la prolongación de su propio cuerpo. Y es por eso que son cuerpos sin identidad, con apenas rasgos físicos que los definan, incluso muchos son personajes asexuados, pues en realidad son recipientes rellenos con las vísceras de la cocinera.
De esta exposición surgieron las Siamesas Golosas: Sara Li y Ana K y todo su mundo de grandes banquetes caníbales.
En 2009 las siamesas abrieron su propia fábrica y tienda de conservas agridulces en el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo La Conservera, donde vendían sentimientos enlatados. En este mismo año, las siamesas mostraron parte de sus vida en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Santander.

I think it would be correct to say that my artistic career began in 1996 just as I finished studying Fine Arts at Pontevedra University. At that time I collected images from children’s books, jars of preserves, holy pictures, etc. and alter them in order to change their original meanings, my intention being that we question the appearance of what is usually taken for granted. Of particular interest from that period was a series of cut-out dolls for which I was selected to take part in La Muestra de Arte Joven and in Circuitos de Artes Plásticos, just one year after graduating, in 1997.

In 1998 I had my first solo show. It was at the Marta Cervera gallery. There I presented a series of huge paintings of wedding cakes in which the bride and groom play different kinds of sex games on a bed of cream and sugared flowers on the top of the cake. At the same time I took part in the Madrid- Berlin exhibition at what was then the Centro Cultural Conde Duque in Madrid and continued at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin.

In 2000 I started to work with Galería Espacio Mínimo. I have had four solo shows with them and have taken part in many international fairs such as ARCO, Frieze, Artisima, Art Chigaco, Voltes etc. I work with them at present. My first show with Espacio Mínimo in the year 2000 was called Beefcake, paying homage to Tom of Finland. The show featured sculptures of cakes made of huge penises; portraits in oils of women caressing and fondling their penis-dogs; and photographs salvaged from the penis family album – a really fun show which had a follow-up a year later in San Francisco, at the Catherine Clark gallery. This solo show was called Wedding Day and featured pictures of the penis family’s wedding, drawing on images from my own parents’ wedding album.

I think it’s also worth mentioning my last show but one at Espacio Mínimo, “Cómeme, Cómeme” (2004), for epitomizing a definitive change in the direction of my work. The show invites us into an unusual cake shop where we can try a great variety of meat jellies (with brain, intestines, heart, veins, muscles, etc.) and pies and cakes made from people’s diseased skins. In this show, we are taken to the very door of pain and suffering in order to see our own fragility and that which frightens us. Out of this exhibition grew the need to work with video. After nearly two years creating sculptures of cakes, I began to see them as the presentation of something finished, but also as something that suggested a process. As I became interested in this imaginary process in which human jellies had been made, I thought of depicting it through video, as if it really were following a recipe, and thus I was thrown into the world of video.

Last of all, I’d like to mention my most recent work, which under the name of “Carnicería Love” takes us to a butcher shop of human meat. The Carnicería Love (The Love Butcher’s) is a place where feelings are cooked. The women in Carnicería Love (in the photos, drawings and video) may, on first sight, appear to be preparing dishes with the bodies of other human beings. However, it is in fact, their own hearts that they pull out, chop, sauté and roast. In other words, they are cooking themselves.

Most cultures actually accept this relationship between feelings and food, especially between love and food: mothers try to make tasty meals for their children; when we have guests we go out of our way to offer them the best we have (insofar as we can - this is not a question of money or being a great cook). All kinds of events are celebrated around the dining table. It is as though we project a part of ourselves onto the food we prepare.

In this way, the bodies on which the recipes are carried out represent the exteriorization of the feelings of those who are cooking them. These cooks are not trying to hurt or assault others, but to express their own pain, suffering, impotence etc. The cooked bodies become a reflection of these sentiments. Thus, each recipe is an inward gaze and a way of purging the pain.

Even though fear is shown reflected outside the body, it comes from within. That other, the monster that terrifies her, is within her but she takes it out and puts it on the table to confront it. This monster is part of her being and so the bodies she cooks are almost an extension of her own body. That is why they are without an identity, with hardly any defining features, many of them asexual beings; in fact they are bowls filled with the cooks guts.
